Maycomb Society by Alexandra Finch
I am Alexandra Finch, Jean-Louise and Jeremy Finch's aunt. I feel very strongly about the trial of Tom Robinson that has recently happened. In my opinion, children should not have been allowed to go in to the court room at the time of the trial. The trial itself was scarring for even the most mature of adults, let alone for my brother Atticus' children. My niece and nephew were present at the trial on that horrid day. My nephew came home from the trial in tears and his heart was hurting. It was entirely too inappropriate for children to be there, even Scout was upset over the outcome of the trial, and she hardly understood any of it. As a result, as a parent, Atticus has to deal with his children, who snuck into the trial, and comfort them when he shouldn't have to. I'm not saying that this whole ordeal is anybody's fault, but the trial should have been a closed trial with no public access therefore, the children would not have been capable of getting to watch the days event unfold. In my opinion, the man, Tom, should not have been ruled guilty, I know that for Atticus, that the case was a life-changing event, but I agree whole-heartedly, that Tom was not guilty. The kids are the most innocent beings on our great Earth, and they listened to the evidence against Tom, and if they were on the jury, Tom would still be walking freely. It isn't right that the jury that convicted Tom, was a racist, and biased one. If we were living in a different time, Tom wouldn't have been in court in the first place. However, we are living in this time, and children are exposed to horrid, and unfair events. In conclusion, I believe that the children of Maycomb should not have been exposed to this trial and that there should have been more security from my curious niece and nephew. The Tom Robinson trial is a sad story, although it had the potential to become one with a happy ending, the trial started on an unfair note, and it ended on one as well.
